The culture you have created as a leader might not be as pretty as you think it is. If this is the case for your organization, the following guidelines will help you develop a plan for culture change.
- Face the ugly baby problem.
- Ask yourself, what parts of the culture need to change (strategy, ideal culture, real culture and gaps between them)
- Create a new, shared vision & common direction
- Decide what the organization should look like and how it should optimally function
- Remember the role of senior management in leading the culture change
- Develop a plan to create the motivation to change the existing culture among key stakeholders
- Develop targets of intervention at various levels of the organization
- Determine the sources of resistance and obstacles to culture change & develop strategy of getting around
- these obstacles and sacred cows
- Craft an implementation plan with timelines and milestones
- Remember, it is critical to widely communicate the plan on an ongoing basis
- Don't get complacent: institutionalize and reinforce the changes in culture
- Establish a cultural norm for continuous learning and continuous cultural transformation
